If you would like to take good care of your lawn, you need to take a number of things into consideration. One of the things that will guide you in the best way to take is the condition of your lawn in the first place. For example, a lawn that is quite rough and thin will need a different work from one in a fairly good condition. Another thing that will guide you in the proper lawn maintenance is the season. The following are some of the general tips that will help you in taking the best care of your lawn.
Do not disturb the lawn when the ground is still too wet. Wait until the ground is sufficiently firm to step on before you start working on it. If you would like to thicken your existing lawn, repair damaged areas or apply grass seed, then the best time is during fall. Do not apply seed as the same time as weed control products because they are often not compatible. As a rule of thumb, apply them in different seasons.
Rake up leaves, dead grass and debris in the early spring. Areas of the lawn with high traffic should be aerated annually while the areas with relatively less traffic should only be aerated after every other year. You should preferably aerate before applying fertilizer to give nutrients easier time to get to the root system. Aeration also allows water and air to get into the ground to help strengthen the roots.
When mowing, make sure the blade is sharp so the lawn does not appear frayed. During fall and spring, mow between two and three inches but raise the blade by about half an inch during hot weather conditions to help the lawn resist drought better. For a more even surface, alternate the direction of cut, which will also manage coarser grass better. Ensure you do not cut more than a third of the grass at any single mowing.
During dry weather conditions, water heavily once every week instead of sprinkling every day to ensure you wet the root system thoroughly. Otherwise you will encourage shallow roots. Watering at night encourages the development of fungi.
Remove all debris before applying fertilizer and ensure you read the label well. Let 48 hours pass before watering the lawn after applying fertilizer. Of course, ensure you wash after applying the fertilizer!
These few tips will help you take better care of your lawn.
